Technical Requirements

LSE Space is looking for an experienced Engineer (m/f) in order to fulfill the duty of

Applications Engineering Support

for our customer EUMETSAT in Darmstadt/Germany.

The engineer will be a member of a multi-disciplinary engineering team supporting operational and future programmes.

A core activity will be the maintenance and evolution of the EPS data and product processing systems. The EPS Ground Segment monitors and controls EUMETSAT's METOP satellites and processes all data from its instrument payload, the MSG and MTP Ground Segments monitor and control the Meteosat satellites and processes all data from its instruments and the Jason 2 ground segment processes all data from the instruments onboard of Jason satellites.

All Ground Segments have specific facilities for Spacecraft monitoring and control, product generation and distribution and product quality control and calibration and validation activities.

The tasks of the position include in particular:

·         Contribute to the definition, design, implementation and maintenance of architectures for data processing ground segments and their components - with special emphasis on product quality control, calibration and validation, production monitoring and reporting.

·         Support the operations of existing data processing ground segments and their maintenance and evolution. This will also include: Upgrade software, including implementing and maintaining new algorithms for product quality control and calibration/validation activities.

·         Perform routine tasks in operational systems under configuration control such as:

o   Support the Configuration Management process and the building and distribution of software releases and patches;

o   Support to the development, integration and configuration management of software developed by third parties, its installation, and configuration and testing;

o   Anomaly investigations, documentation and classification;

o   Follow up of the delivery of S/W resolutions for these anomalies.

·         Perform standard SW engineering activities such as:

o   S/W testing in a structured approach to verify that delivered S/W is fulfilling the requirements or to demonstrate that problems have been corrected;

o   S/W integration and verification in the EUMETSAT ground segments.

·         Setting-up and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures;

·         Support to the procurement and installation of software, and the co-ordination with external providers of support services;

·         Participation in meetings and formal reviews.

Academic Requirements

A University degree in a relevant discipline is required.

Specific Requirements

·         experience in system design, S/W development, operation, maintenance and trouble shooting of large complex real-time data processing systems for meteorological satellites;

·         very good communication, presentation and team working skills;

·         ability to adapt to a rapidly changing, often stressful environment and retain a system overview;

·         Experience of operating and maintaining software systems in a UNIX based environment (specifically LINUX and AIX);

·         C/C++ programming language experience in a UNIX based environment;

·         Use of and application programming of database systems in particular ORACLE, INFORMIX, PostgreSQL and MySQL;

·         Competence in the use of scripting languages (e.g., shell scripting) and high-level languages (e.g., Python, Java);

·         Knowledge of web technologies, programming and markup languages (e.g. Apache, CGI, JavaScript, UML);

·         Competence in S/W testing, unit test suite maintenance, automated testing, verification and validation;

Practical knowledge of as many as possible of the following areas will be an advantage:

·         Experience in system design for quality control and cal/val systems;

·         Experience with operational Earth Observation science data processing;

·         Data visualisation tools, e.g. IDL, ENVI;

·         Familiarity with data formats used for meteorological satellite products;

·         Experience in using Python libraries and tools, such as Matplotlib, NumPy, Django and accessing sql databases from Python;

·         Knowledge of relevant Standards, Quality Assurance and Configuration Management principles and applications;

·         Very good technical writing skills, in particular in the area of formal technical documentation, e.g. design documentation, test procedures, maintenance procedures;

·         Competence in the exploitation of modern hardware and operating systems at the application level (e.g., multithreading, parallel programming (e.g. MPI, OpenMP), virtualization);

·         Competence in object-oriented software design and implementation in the context of satellite instrument data processing systems.

Perfect command of English, verbal and written. Knowledge of French would be an asset.
